International Online Master’s Degree in Sports Studies

Within the framework of the European Higher Education Area, European universities are tasked with designing master’s programs capable of offering specialized, advanced, and high-quality education. A master’s program of this kind represents a significant expansion of the education of individuals and professionals working in the fields of sports and culture, as it fosters the development of critical thinking and cross-disciplinary skills that are often given less emphasis in undergraduate programs in sports science. This master’s program aims to highlight the humanistic and interdisciplinary dimensions of sport, giving full meaning to an educational field in which the body is a central element. The academic and scientific approach therefore explores the humanistic roots of sport, placing anthropos—understood as a person embedded in a culture, a society, and a shared horizon of meanings—at the center.

To encourage participation by as many students as possible, the master’s program will be delivered online, with a predominantly asynchronous structure. From this perspective, educational activities will be conducted using digital tools and supplemented with audiovisual materials that students can access independently, according to their own schedules and learning paces. The learning environment will therefore be based on recorded lectures, study materials organized by instructional units, and individual tutoring sessions, with the aim of ensuring a flexible, accessible educational pathway with ongoing support.

This interdisciplinary master’s program is grounded in a strong academic interest in sports studies and addresses a current need in higher education. Its focus is on exploring in depth the scientific, social, linguistic, educational, and cultural dimensions of sports. In this regard, the proposed program has clear scientific value, as it aims to promote, coordinate, and develop research dedicated to sports, its culture, and its many implications for contemporary society.

For these reasons, the first-level master’s program offered by the University of Rome “Foro Italico” and Universitas Castellae provides training in sports designed to delve into aspects that are often overlooked in undergraduate programs. In addition, the master’s program features a faculty drawn from prestigious universities, including Aberystwyth University, the University of North Texas, the University of Seville, the Central University of Venezuela, the University of Valladolid, UNIR, the Complutense University of Madrid, and Foro Italico, among others.

Each student will be assigned a mentor who will guide them throughout their academic journey, supervise their learning process, and offer support in resolving any difficulties or questions that may arise during the course.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The master’s program is designed for:

• Bachelor’s degree holders in any discipline

• Professors of sports science and social sciences and humanities

• Coaches, educators, trainers, and sports technicians

• Researchers

• Individuals interested in the program’s subject areas

• Cultural consultants

• Sports lawyers

• Sports journalists

• Specialists in sports event organization

• Professionals in physical and sports activities

• Any interested college graduate

OBJECTIVES

1. To enrich the field of study and research in sports sciences in a critical and interdisciplinary manner.

2. To attract and meet the educational needs and aspirations of graduates and professionals interested in the study of sports culture.

3. To foster the development of a critical-reflective, interdisciplinary, and humanistic perspective within current academic programs dedicated to sports.

4. To provide knowledge and useful resources to open new avenues for humanistic research related to sports and the holistic education of the individual.

The master’s program will be delivered exclusively online, and the instructional materials will be available on the Moodle platform. This program will be conducted through recorded classes uploaded to the learning platform.

The curriculum will be organized into modules and virtual classrooms corresponding to each course. Each virtual classroom will feature videos covering the fundamental aspects of each discipline; each video will be no longer than twenty minutes. These audiovisual materials will be supplemented by shorter videos—designed as “educational bite-sized segments”—podcasts, open-access digital readings or those provided by the instructor, and PowerPoint presentations intended to summarize the main content.

Assessment will be ongoing and will be based on assignments completed by students and on exams.

The languages of the master’s program will be Spanish, Italian, and English. Each professor will teach in their native language, with translation provided into the other two languages.

The credits for the courses offered in the master’s program will be distributed as follows:

Master’s Thesis 6

MASTER’S THESIS

As an advanced degree program, the master’s program requires the completion of a final thesis designed to clearly and substantively demonstrate the competencies acquired by the student through the various courses taken.

Each thesis must be supervised by one or two advisors and will be defended by the student before a committee composed of three members of the master’s program’s faculty. The master’s program coordinator will receive the student’s proposal—related to one of the areas of the academic track—and will designate the professor responsible for supervising the thesis. The thesis topic will be determined by mutual agreement between the advisor and the student.

The thesis title and advisor will be assigned only after the student has completed all the credits corresponding to the courses specified in the curriculum.

Types of Final Projects

• Scientific article for a journal: a paper that meets the formal and methodological requirements of an article intended for a journal related to the fields covered by the master’s program.

• Essay: a paper designed to explore a topic of study and research related to the master’s program, in which the methodology, objectives, line of argument, and conclusions are clearly defined, in accordance with the initial proposal.

The master’s final project must be between 30 and 50 pages in length (corresponding to approximately 10,500–20,000 words), with 1.5 line spacing. To this end, students will be provided with a specific template. Students will select the topic on which they wish to base their thesis; the thesis will be supervised by one of the master’s program faculty members or by supporting teaching staff. Subsequently, a committee consisting of the advisor and two other faculty members from the master’s program will be formed, before which the student will defend their thesis.

Thesis Defense

The defense will be public and in-person, in any of the three languages in which the master’s program is offered, before the committee and the community of faculty and students. The student will have a maximum of 10 minutes for their presentation, during which they will outline the topic, methodology, objectives, and conclusions reached in the thesis. Following this, the committee members will ask their questions. The committee will then deliberate in private and announce the final grade according to the following scale:

9,6–10: A+ / A — Outstanding

8,5–9,5: A / A− — Excellent

7–8,4: B+ / B — Very Good / Good

5–6,9: C+ / C — Satisfactory / Pass

< 5: F — Fail

The final grade will be calculated as follows: the advisor’s grade will account for 60%, while the committee’s grade will account for the remaining 40%. The master’s thesis may be submitted, after all other course credits for the degree have been successfully completed, starting from the ninth month after the start of the academic year, calculated from the student’s enrollment date.
